The Skinny on Bulky Skirts

You’ve read the claims…. “Our baits are better, ’cause our skirts are fuller, with fifty (or sixty, or even more) strands!” In reality, when it comes to spinnerbait skirts, more is rarely better.

Let me offer an illustration. I love pot roast, and my wife’s pot roast is as good as it gets. When she adds just one tablespoon of salt in the pot, it tastes perfect. If one tablespoon makes it taste so good, wouldn’t it be improved even more by adding a cup of salt instead? No, of course not. Once the best condition is achieved, more becomes less. Adding anything just detracts from the optimum state.

Some manufacturers seem to design skirts so they look best in the package. Secret Weapon Lures carefully designs its skirts to attain a shape and profile that produce the best results in the water. Strand counts vary on each size skirt and even from model-to-model of the same general size in order to achieve the best possible effect during the retrieve or on the drop. In most cases, that means our skirts may appear to be on the skimpy side, when it comes to strand counts.

Do we risk losing some customers who insist on buying the thickest skirts available? We probably do; but fortunately, Secret Weapon Lures users show a strong preference for features that deliver better performance — ones that attract fish, and not just fishermen.

Each component of our lures, including the skirts, is painstakingly designed to achieve a specific appearance and performance during use. Secret Weapon Lures uses no “off-the-shelf” components in construction of spinnerbaits. Skirts are constructed of the finest silicone strands and the highest-grade latex collars available. Removing individual strands to thin our skirts is not necessary or recommended. Strand counts vary by skirt size and even between models of the same general size.

In most situations, a thick, bulky spinnerbait skirt is not desirable, as it hinders the lure’s tantalizing, pulsating motion. On rare occasions when it might help, bulking-up can be achieved with a plastic or pork trailer. Secret Weapon’s molded-in keeper barb ensures plastic trailers don’t slide down the hook shaft and interfere with a good hookset.
